Why teach at NLCS Jeju?
You may not have any personal experience of independent Schools and you may not have considered teaching in an independent School before. However each year teachers join NLCS (UK) as NQTs or with experience from maintained Schools or from abroad. They all find the NLCS environment a stimulating and supportive one in which to work. They enjoy the challenge of teaching very bright students many of whom come from a wide range of social, cultural and ethnic backgrounds.
Stimulating academic environment
Following in the footsteps of its English partner School, NLCS Jeju will be academically selective, with the aim of providing an ambitious education for all its students and to enable each one to make the most of his or her own gifts. An equally high priority is to maintain a team of professional teachers to whom each student is important, and who can introduce their subjects with enthusiasm and drive.
The students at NLCS Jeju will be taught in relatively small classes, an average of 24 students in the Junior School, decreasing to an average of 21 in the Senior School and 14 in Sixth Form IB classes.
Well resourced
All departments will be extremely well resourced with textbooks and equipment. Generous departmental budgets will ensure that resources are kept up to date and innovative teaching initiatives can be funded. Teachers will share offices with colleagues from their own and other departments in order to preserve the collegial atmosphere which is a vital part of the School's philosophy and founding.
The School will be fully computer networked and all teaching rooms will have a staff computer linked to the internet. Each classroom will have an interactive white board, equipped with a sound system. The School's technical support will be exceptional in order to provide teaching staff with reprographics, audio-visual and ICT resources as well as subject specific needs in art, science and technology.
Extra-curricular activities
All members of staff will be expected to make a voluntary contribution to the extra-curricular life of the School. The full programme will cater for a wide range of interests from chess to football, gymnastics to singing but there will always be scope to introduce a new club or activity and share your particular expertise and interest with the students. There will be plenty of opportunity to help with outdoor activities and staff are expected to help with School trips which could range from skiing to canoeing, museums to mountain climbing.
Relax!
Teaching is a stressful occupation and taking time out to relax is very important. Staff will be encouraged to take advantage of the sports centre to use the fitness suite or to arrange games of football or badminton with colleagues. At certain times each weekday and on Saturdays the indoor swimming pool will be reserved exclusively for staff use.
Staff will be able to use a comfortable and spacious staffroom whenever they wish, which will have an attached staff study providing a silent working area.
Support, Training and Professional Development
There will be an extensive programme of support and training for all new staff, including a thorough induction process to introduce staff to the various aspects of NLCS Jeju.
Our generous Inset budget will ensure that staff can keep up to date with educational issues and encourages professional development. There are also opportunities to gain experience through temporary unpaid posts, such as assistant to a Head of School or through posts of responsibility, such as Career Advisor.
