Languages study also enhances listening skills and memory. Furthermore, our students develop greater cognitive skills in such areas as mental flexibility, creativity, divergent thinking and higher order thinking skills (Foster and Reeves; Landry; Rafferty; Ginsburg and McCoy).

Latin is an excellent subject to study both for the support it gives to learning in other subjects and for its intrinsic interest.
Academic English has its roots in the Latin language. Over 50% of words in an English dictionary are derived from Latin roots. Such words are often those used in more formal registers (eg vision rather than seeing, laudable rather than good). The study of Latin grammar improves the students’ precision of English expression as well as enabling them to make faster progress in modern foreign languages. Accuracy over detail is an essential skill developed; this is useful in many other areas, notably computer programming. Studies in several countries have shown the positive impact of studying Latin on children’s literacy skills and cognitive development.
Roman culture is fascinating, and we study a range of topics including gladiator shows, slavery and the archaeology of Pompeii. We consider original Roman source material and pose questions about how we know about the Romans; this is a basis for the theory of knowledge, an important component of the IB. Students also meet Roman myths and literature – inspiring stories and a foundation for the study of English literature.
